“An infectiously sincere love story… Duff doesn’t force any answers, instead presenting a quiet, thoughtful portrait of love caught in the pull between hyper-connectivity and loneliness.”
— IndieWire
“Extremely entertaining... can’t help but make you smile and, when things do get more emotional, you’re already so engaged with [the] character that you feel that much more… A very entertaining film that is far more interesting in its execution than it may seem in simple explanation. It has the feel of a crowd-pleaser, and it wears its heart on its sleeve.”
— Film Threat
“A sweet epistolary romance for the 21st century… it carries on with great charm and a romantic spirit that’s rarely found at the movies today… I started to think they were real people and couldn’t wait for them to meet to either fulfill my cynical anticipation for devastating awkwardness or to warm my heart with an impractical yet acceptable fantasy situation… A cute, clever and compelling little film that both satisfies and reinvents the indie rom-com for a new generation used to developing relationships through digital and virtual means… A fresh structure with convincing and likable leads results in one of the most inventive romantic pictures in a long time.”
— FilmSchool Rejects
“The romantic poetry of our new millennia, effortlessly communicating a rainbow of emotions and insights that mere words could never possibly do justice. Admirably never straying from the artistic integrity of this project, writer-director James E. Duff’s ‘Hank and Asha’ develops a faithful collage of found footage into an intriguing treatise on modern communication, technology and human relationships.”

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

With HANK AND ASHA, I wanted to tell a story about the absolute thrill of making a deep connection with someone, and explore the dynamics of a correspondence – rich with expectation, excitement, and projection.

When we wrote the story we were living in Prague, trying to establish ourselves in a new city. In spite of email, Facebook, Skype and the like, we felt unexpectedly isolated. At other times in our lives, we’d found solace in letter writing. But who writes letters anymore?

I wanted to re-imagine a correspondence in our globally connected, digital world. What would that look like?

The idea for the film crystallized when we were discussing all of this with our friend Raj, and he showed us how he had courted his wife, Jess, by sending her video love letters from the road. They were charming, embarrassing, and utterly compelling to watch. In fact, it felt like a movie.

Above all, HANK AND ASHA is a boy-meets-girl love story, they just happen to be half way around the world from each other. By choosing to limit their modes of communication, they heighten the mystery and anticipation inherent in getting to know each other. Their nostalgic stance is liberating; they give themselves something to look forward to, and an opportunity to play, have fun, and discover something unexpected.
