When a crew moves into an abandoned psychiatric hospital with a shadowy past, they get more than they bargained for. The late nights and lack of sleep begin to take a toll, and the longer this crew works, the more the leaky, wet building seems to be coming back to life, feeding off its new inhabitants.

THE BACKSTORY

KIRKBROOKE STATE HOSPITAL

Kirkbrooke State Hospital opened its doors in the spring of 1913. Located on an isolated site in rural New England, this multi-acre, self-contained psychiatric facility was one of the first public teaching hospitals in the country and responsible for training several generations of leaders in field of psychiatry.

History
While the hospital was originally established to provide residential treatment and care to the mentally ill, its functions expanded to include a training program for nurses in 1915 and a pathological research laboratory in 1918. By the 1930s the hospital was operating school clinics to help determine mental deficiency in children. During the 1960s as a result of increased emphasis on alternative methods of treatment, deinstitutionalization, and community-based mental health care, the inpatient population started to decrease. Due to budget cuts within the mental health system, the hospital was closed in the spring of 1998.

Pioneering Research
Kirkbrooke State Hospital was at the forefront of medical research and one of the first hospitals to use Hydrotherapy as treatment of some mental disorders.

Indigent Programs
The hospital transitioned from a private institution in the early twenties to one which administered to and cared for the poor and indigent with a mission to care for the seriously mentally ill regardless of their financial circumstances.

Controversy
When the hospital's superintendant Dr. Walter Reinhart took his life in 2003, it came as terrible blow to Kirkbrooke. The hospital had come under increased scrutiny during the early nineties and Dr. Reinhart himself had been investigated for administering questionable treatments on the hospital's indigent patients. After his death, the investigations into the doctor's practices were suspended and when the Kirkbrooke was shut down the following year the investigations were closed and all records into the matter were sealed.
